All About Trans fat
Zero trans fat, no trans fat…. So what’s the story with trans fats?
These fats are created during food processing when liquid oils are converted into semi-solid fats — a process called hydrogenation.
Advantage:-They tend to keep food fresh longer while on grocery shelves i.e increase the shelf life.
Disadvantage:- Trans fats increases the level of bad cholesterol (LDL) in your bloodstream and decrease the level of good cholesterol (HDL). Increased LDL in your system clogs arteries and leads to increased risk of coronary heart disease.
It’s also suggested that the consumption of trans fats can lead to other diseases, but more research is needed. These diseases include Alzheimer’s disease, cancer, diabetes, obesity and liver dysfunction.
Major Sources of Trans Fat
Because trans fats extend the shelf life of food, they are found in processed foods, most of the prepackaged baked goods like-
Margarine and Butter Substitutes
Fast Food fried foods like french fries, chicken nuggets, fried chicken, potato chips
Desserts brownies, doughnuts, frosted cakes, cookies, pastries and pound cake.
Baseline
Read the labels and avoid foods with the words “hydrogenated oil” or “partially hydrogenated oil” in the ingredients list.
