Healthy Lifestyles Awareness Day is held on the 22nd of February as a reminder for everyone to live healthier lives.
It is not just about eating enough fruits and vegetables but also considering the fact that everything that goes into the body should provide some benefit.
The trick to healthy living is making small changes…taking more steps, adding fruit to your cereal, having an extra glass of water…these are just a few ways you can start living healthy without drastic changes.
10 simple steps to live a healthy lifestyle
1.Lower Salt Intake
Do you know we need only 1tsp(5gms) of salt a day.
Too much salt intake increases blood pressure in the long run which also increases risk of heart disease and stroke. The intake of processed foods and fast food should also be decreased because these are typically high in sodium and other preservatives that are bad for general health.
2.Get Your Daily Dose Of Vitamin D
Almost each one of us are suffering from this deficiency as we spend a lot of time indoors today. Also if we go out….may not be at the right time needed to generate this vitamin.The result is brittle bones and other health problems.
Vitamin D is known as the sunshine vitamin since it is created by the body after sun exposure.
Ensure good amount of sunlight between 10am to 3pm especially on face, hands and legs below knee.
3.Increase Calcium Intake
Calcium is a very important mineral not just for healthy bones and teeth. It is also vital for other bodily functions like the contraction of muscles.
Drinking a glass of milk or egg or eating a few nuts a day.
4.Eat A Balanced Diet
Balance is the key to having a healthy diet.
Eating a healthy diet which is another part of the healthy lifestyle. Not only it will help with weight management, it can also improve your health and quality of life as you get older.
5.Reduce intake of processed foods.
Remember foods that go bad are good for you.
Exclude the bad fats from food and have food rich in vegetables and fruits, protein rich meat like chicken and fish, fiber, nuts and legumes.
6.Limit Alcohol Intake
Too much alcohol is bad for your health because of many reasons. It can even lead to damage of your internal organs specifically the liver with long-term alcohol abuse. According to guidelines from the government, men should only consume three servings of alcohol daily while women should only consume a maximum of 2 servings a day.
7.Exercise Regularly
Engage in moderate to brisk exercise activities for atleast half-an-hour or more every day We know it’s good for us but avoid it like the plague either because we’re used to being sedentary or afraid that exercise has to be vigorous to be worth our time.
It would be best to combine cardiovascular exercise with some weight training to strengthen your heart and other muscles in the body.
8.Stop Smoking
Aside from cancer, there are many other negative health effects from smoking. In fact, smoking increases the risk of more than 50 serious health conditions. It can even decrease your fertility aside from making you smell like an ashtray.
9.Socialize
Quality time with friends and family can help improve your health according to several studies. In fact, married people and those who have friends have been shown to live longer when compared to those who are lonely and isolate themselves socially.
10.Stay Hydrated
This is very important especially when you live in a hot place. Limit intake of dehydrating beverages like alcoholic drinks and those that contain caffeine like tea, coffee.

Living healthier is not really as hard as you think. Just like with everything else, it starts with a single step. Whether it is getting rid of junk food from your diet or walking during your lunch breaks, that first step is the most important part.
